Individuals who were injured in Friday's two-vehicle accident in this village have been treated and released from hospitals, Monroeville Capt. James Bond said.
Samantha Jo Hunt, 24, of Sandusky, was cited for failing to stop at a red light in connection with the accident, which resulted in several people being taken by ambulance or flown to hospitals. Hunt also was cited for failure to have booster seats for child passengers.
Hunt was driving a 2000 blue dodge minivan north on Ohio 99 when she failed to stop for the red light at the U.S. 20 intersection. Meanwhile, the light turned green for westbound traffic on U.S. 20, including a 2004 red jeep liberty driven by Meredith Lendrum, 18, of Ridge Road. Lendrum's vehicle struck the right rear of the dodge minivan, which was totaled, Bond said.
"It's totally the van's fault," he said. "Even if you have the right of way at an intersection, that doesn't mean you shouldn't look both ways to make sure it's clear just in case someone is running the light. You just never know what's going on."
Bond said authorities collected information about the crash from witness statements, the damages to the vehicles, roadway markings and statements from the parties involved.
Lendrum's passenger was 16-year-old Ashlee McClish of Norwalk.
Meanwhile, Hunt's passengers included Kristopher Dewitt, 23, of Sandusky and three children, Claira Hunt, 4, Kelcey Dewitt, 7, and Lucius Hunt, 3.
In the minivan, Lucius Hunt, sat on the driver's side of the middle of three rows, while Kelcey and Claira, were in the third rows, Kelcey on the driver's side and Claira on the passenger side.
Claira & Samantha Jo Hunt were both transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center and then LifeFlighted to Akron Children's Hospital. They were both treated and released. Kelcey and Lucius were not injured.
Lendrum was flown from the scene to St. Vincent in Toledo, where she was treated and released. McClish was also transported to Fisher-Titus, where she was treated and released.
All passengers were wearing lap and shoulder belts and no airbags deployed. However, the children riding in the minivan were not wearing booster seats except for 3-year-old Lucius, who was in a harness seat.
As of Oct. 7, 2009, Ohio's children are required to use belt-positioning booster seats once they outgrow their child safety seats (usually at 4 years old and 40 pounds) until they are 8 years old, unless they are at least 4 feet, 9 inches (57 inches) tall.
