Automobile accidents cost the United States economy almost $100 billion annually, with a cost to each licensed driver of roughly $500 per year, according to a new study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC found that motor vehicle accidents contributed 71 percent of the total cost, about $70 billion, while motorcycle accidents cost $12 billion, pedestrian accidents cost $10 billion and bicycle accidents cost about $5 billion. Fatalities accounted for more than half the cost - $58 billion.
Noting that most of the accidents were preventable, the CDC included a list of recommendations and an automobile accident fact sheet meant to decrease fatalities and injuries. Suggestions included the increased use of sobriety checkpoints and laws mandating the sue of motorcycle and bicycle helmets, as well as primary seatbelt laws that would allow police officers to stop a vehicle if the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
