A local Ohio representative has introduced a bill to ban texting and driving statewide.
Ohio Rep. Rex Damschroder, R-Fremont, and Nancy Garland, D-Gahanna, introduced House Bill 99 this week. Damschroder plans to testify at a hearing on the bill in two weeks.
The bill would make the practice of texting while driving a primary offense, meaning drivers can be pulled over if police see them texting while driving. Individuals caught texting while driving would be subject to a misdemeanor charge and a $150 fine.
Exceptions in the bill include texting for emergency purposes, use by public safety personnel, texting while a vehicle is parked, and the use of a device for navigation.
The bill also maintains that only warnings would be issued for the first six months after the law goes into effect.
