Everyday eight teens are killed in car accidents. Be sure your young driver is aware of these leading causes of teen accidents and put rules in place to keep your teen stay safe. 1) Driver inexperience o Most accidents happen during the first year that a teen has their license. Make sure your teen practices on a variety of roads, at different times of day, and in different weather and traffic conditions 2) Driving with teen passengers o The risk of having an accident goes up when teens drive with other teens in the car. Follow your state's teen driving laws for passenger restrictions. If your state doesn't have a rule then you as a parent need to limit the number of teen passengers your teen can drive with to zero or one. At least for the first six months this rule should be kept 3) Nighttime driving o Fatal accidents are more likely to happen at night. Make sure your teen is off the road by 9 or 10 p.m. at least for the first six months that they have their license 4) Not using seat belts o The easiest way to prevent car accident deaths is to buckle up. Make your teen to wear a seat belt on every trip, no excuses 5) Distracted driving o Distractions increase your teen's risk of being in an accident. Don't allow any activities that may divert your teen's attention away from the road, like talking on a cell phone, texting, eating, or even playing with the radio 6) Drowsy driving o Young drivers are at the highest risk for drowsy driving it causes thousands of accidents each year. Teens are most tired and at risk when they are driving early in the morning or late at night. Be sure your teen is fully rested before they get behind the wheel 7) Reckless driving o Research has shown that teens lack the experience, judgment, and maturity to evaluate risky situations like speeding, tailgating, and scanning o Speeding, be sure your teen knows to follow the speed limit and adapt their speed to the road conditions o Tailgating, emphasize to your teen that they need to maintain enough space between them and the vehicle in front of them so incase the vehicle suddenly stops they have enough time to stop and not hit the car in front of them o Insufficient scanning, emphasize the importance of always knowing where the other vehicles are on the road 8) Impaired driving o Just one drink can impair your teen's driving abilities and increase their risk of being in an accident. Be a good role model and don't drink and drive
