A man who claimed that a defective seatbelt design caused him to be ejected from a vehicle in a car crash and became paralyzed has won a $19 million verdict from an Arkansas jury. Eric Polston, who was 18 at the time of the accident, was traveling on an Arkansas highway with his fiancée in December 2005 to show his mother a puppy he had received for Christmas.
When a dog ran in front of Polston's vehicle, he swerved to avoid hitting it and his 1988 Ford Winstar rolled over. Polston was ejected from the vehicle and became paralyzed from the waist down - leaving him with only partial use of his hands and arms.
Ploston sued Ford, alleging that the design of the seatbelt buck was defective because the release button protruded above the top of the buckle, making it easy to be inadvertently released in a crash.
