The third blog in a series on texting behind the wheel highlights the driving abilities of Driver #2, a 37-year-old male, in Car and Drivers' recent experiment exploring drinking and driving vs. texting and driving.
In the experiment, two drivers were instructed to drive on a closed course and to brake immediately after seeing a red flashing light, meant to represent brake lights. In the first round, they were supposed to type a text message while driving. In the second round they were instructed to read an incoming text message. For the third round, the drivers consumed enough alcoholic beverages to raise their blood alcohol levels to 0.08, the legal driving limit.
The results for Driver #2 were shocking! After consuming the alcoholic beverages, Driver #2's stop time suffered. He travelled an extra seven feet before stopping, which would probably would have resulted in a rear-end collision had there been a car stopped in front of him.
But here is the really scary part: Driver #2 stopped a whopping 45 feet late during the time that he was driving and reading a text at the same time (that's more than two car lengths!). He stopped 41 feet late when he has been typing a text message.
