Typically, more than half of all vehicle-deer accidents occur annually during the months of October and December. This is even in spite of recent advancements in car safety and collision warning systems now installed in many car makes and models.
Insurance agency State Farm, has recently stated that the overall number of deer-car accidents have grown by more then 18% over the past five years. This is due to the fact of deer overpopulation in many states as well as an increase in expanding suburbs into once animal occupied territories. It has also been reported that there are over 150 fatalities each year related to these accidents.
The average cost of car-deer collisions has nearly doubled the past ten years from about $1,750 to a little over $3,000 per accident, that number does not include the emotional and mental stress involved in recovering from the accident days and even weeks later.
Here are some useful tips to help you avoid hitting deer (or any other animals for that matter) this fall season as reported by FOXNews.com
1.) Take special care near deer-crossing warning signs.
Be aware that deer adapt well to living close to humans and that populated areas are just as likely to have deer around. The signs are there for a reason.
2.) Minimize your distractions from passengers, food, and cell phone conversations.
An alert driver is a safe driver. You should get in the habit of scanning the roadside as you drive, being aware of any approaching animals.
3.) Use your high beams whenever possible.
They will give you more time to better spot and react to animals on the sides of the road.
If you follow some of these simple tips you will greatly increase your chances of avoiding a collision with an animal and getting to your destination unscathed.
