before the roads get icy, The Ohio State Highway Patrol is trying to educate motorists on proper safety practices for the winter.
Ohio Highway Patrol is urging drivers to allow extra time to get to their destination, drive slowly, maintain a safe distance, and pay attention to bridges and overpasses.
From December 2010 through March 2011 7,844 people were injured in snow relate accidents and 46 people died. Troopers noted that in 77 percent of those crahses, speed was the main cause. '
Here are some more safety tips from the troopers:
If you break down, make sure your hazard warning lights are on and you are pulled as far off the road as possible.
If you get stuck, make sure your tail pipe is not covered by debris or snow. This decreases the chances of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Ensure your battery, cooling system, tires, wipers and deforster all work.
